In 79CE, the cosmopolitan city of Pompeii and much of its surrounding area were buried under volcanic ash and pumice following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in southern Italy. It was not until the mid-18th century that this city was slowly revealed to the world through archaeological excavations. Pompeii was a bustling and prosperous Roman town with around 20,000 inhabitants at the time of its destruction. Its strategic location, mild climate and fertile soil provided the impetus to the productive agricultural industry as well as the thriving fishing and shipping industries.

As Pompeii’s economy flourished, the city also grew culturally vibrant and people became more affluent. Over 270 objects from the Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici di Napoli e Pompei (SANP), including jewels, frescoes, sculptures and household items, will be on display to reconstruct Pompeii. Highlights include body casts of eight victims, who were ‘immortalised’ during their last moments when Mount Vesuvius erupted, gladiators’ gear, a mosaic fountain and frescoes from the House of the Golden Bracelet.

The creation of Japanese gardens begins with the design of the atmosphere. “Borrowed landscapes” such as the interior design of the building and the architecture of the surrounding area create a subtle union of distant aspects of nature with the garden. The atmosphere created is an expression of the designer’s ability to be in harmony with nature.

In this lecture, Zen priest and internationally-renowned garden designer Prof. Masuno will speak about the culture, history and Zen philosophy behind the creation of Japanese gardens and walk us through his latest garden creation in Singapore at the Nassim Park Residences.

Al Momia, rightfully acknowledged as one of the greatest Egyptian films

ever made, is based on a true story. In this film, archaeologists from the

Antiquities Department in Cairo noticed that several artefacts bearing

royal names from the 21st dynasty kept appearing on the antique black

market. An expedition was sent to Thebes, the capital of the Pharaonic

Empire, to ascertain the cause, where the Pharaoh’s tomb was discovered to

have been plundered for millennia by the Horabat mountain tribe. Their

ancient way of life becomes disrupted when the two sons of the tribal

chieftain refuse to perpetuate the plundering further,

Al Momia has an unusual tone stately, poetic, with a powerful grasp of

time and the sadness that carries. The ceremonial movement of the camera,

the desolate settings, the unsettling score by the great Italian composer

Mario Nascimbene all work in perfect harmony to contribute to the feeling

of fateful inevitability. The picture has a sense of history like no

other, so it came as no surprise that Roberto Rossellini readily agreed to

produce the film after reading the script.

Notes on the restoration

The restoration of Al Momia used the original 35mm camera and sound

negatives preserved at the Egyptian Film Center in Giza and the digital

restoration produced a new 35mm internegative. The film was restored in

2009 by the World Cinema Foundation at Cineteca di Bologna / L’Immagine

Ritrovata Laboratory, with the support of the Egyptian Ministry of

Culture.

About the Director Shadi Abdel Salam (1930 1986)

“I think that the people of my country are ignorant of our history and I

feel that it is my mission to make them know some of it and let others go

on with the rest. I regard cinema not as a consumerist art, but as a

historical document for next generations.” Shadi Abdel Salam

Shadi Abdel Salam, who directed only one full-length feature film has

become firmly established as one of the most important Egyptian directors

of his time.

Born on 15 March 1930 in Alexandria to a family that originally came from

Upper Egypt, he received his education at Victoria College where he

fostered his love for drama. After graduating from Victoria College, he

travelled to Paris, London and Rome to study drama but returned to Egypt

without achieving his goal. On his return, he joined the Architecture

Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Cairo University, where he

graduated in 1954. After graduation, he returned to England once more to

study drama in 1956, to fulfil his original dream.

Abdel Salam started his career in cinema as an assistant director to Salah

Abou Seif. In their first film, The Thug (el Futuwwa), he was more of a

spectator, jotting down the duration of each shot. He later became the

assistant director to Henri Barakat and Helmi Halim, and it was during the

latter’s A Love Story (Qessat houbb) that his talent in set design was

discovered unexpectedly. Many filmmakers were impressed with his décor for

A Love Story, and he subsequently received many designing offers. In fact,

he is still considered as one of the most extraordinary Egyptian set- and

costume-designers in the film industry. In 1967, he designed the set and

costumes of the documentary film Mankind’s Fight for Survival by Roberto

Rossellini. The influence of this great Italian director surpassed that of

any directors he knew and worked with, and after the completion of the

documentary film, he decided to become a director himself.

Thus, in 1969, Abdel Salam started directing his first and only

full-length feature, Al Momia, also known as The Night of Counting of the

Years. The visual impact of the film was his expression of the very

essence of things, which he sought through image, architecture, light and

colour, rather than dramatic action, literary narration or linguistic

dialogues. His choice of classical Arabic also contributed to the

monumental influence of the film, which stands out as a great epic peopled

with larger-than-life characters.

His next ambitious project was The Tragedy of the Great House which was

never completed in spite of twelve years of intensive preparation and

research. Abdel Salam died of cancer at the age of 56, on 8 October 1986,

in Cairo.

Synopsis
Pensive, French chanson-loving cabbie Yigal (Dror Keren) is a mild mannered divorcee working with a psychologist to conquer his fear of flying so he can go to Paris for his son's bar mitzvah. He meets and falls for Lena (Elena Yaralova), a former concert pianist and his son’s Russian music teacher who has been left behind by hubby, Grisha (Vladimir Friedman) while he takes his medical boards in Canada. Lena inevitably comes to feel the same way about Yigal, but their blossoming relationship faces a serious stumbling block when her husband returns to take her to Canada. Unfolding in a working-class suburb of Tel Aviv, this tenderly handled feature is a wistful marriage of comedy and romance. Giancarlo Pacenti is one of the leaders of the younger generation of innovative Montalcinesi who take inspiration and new ideas from outside of the zone and often beyond Italian borders. His two vineyards lie in two very different areas of Montalcino: one to the northeast of the town, where the wines develop full, ripe qualities; and one to the hotter southwest area near Sant'Angelo in Colle, which produces a more powerful, minerally wine. The Rosso is considered to be one of the very best, with the fruit's inherent structure delicately enhanced by a brief passage in barriques (the 2006 vintage has just received 90 points from Parker). Since the 1995 vintage, his Brunello has repeatedly won Gambero Rosso's most prestigious Tre Bicchieri (Three Glass) award in addition to 90+ scores from all the major international publications.

Mazzolino Winery is in the heart of the Oltrepò Pavese near the 45th Parallel. It is in this part of the Po River Valley that the Braggiotti family, owners of the estate since the 1980s, has anchored its desire to produce the finest possible wines. Their 45-acre vineyard is planted in the most-appropriate varietals: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Bonarda find ideal microclimates in the loamy clay soil with east- and west-facing slopes. Integrated grape growing, consisting of controlled fertilization, severe pruning and permanent grass, results in low yield and optimized varietal expression. Recently, its flagship Noir won the prestigious 3 glass Gambero Rosso Award as well

"Giancarlo Pacenti is the best winemaker in the appellation of Brunello di Montalcino. Everything is done in the best possible way and at the right time in his well-kept vineyards and the pristine small winery under his house. His Brunellos are usually a blend of different vineyards from both the south and north sides of the Montalcino hill, giving them great richness and structure as well as freshness. They are aged in French oak barrels yet show very little wood character, and their crystal clear style is one that ages extremely well. Pacenti's 1997 is still a baby, and the 2001 will be his longest-lived vintage yet." The Wine Spectator, July 31, 2007

"Giancarlo Pacenti, 37, has been a bold exponent of the modern approach to making Brunello di Montalcino since he took over his family's 50-acre estate, Siro Pacenti, in 1988. "I found that Brunello made in the traditional way just didn't have enough color and structure to meet the requirements of the international market," he says. He has been fine-tuning his viticulture and winemaking ever since, reducing yields in his vineyards and now aging the wine entirely in small French oak barrels, having abandoned the use of large Slovenian oak casks. This has given him richer, cleaner and fresher wines than his predecessors...The results of his experiments are impressive." -- The Wine Spectator

"Giancarlo Pacenti is widely considered to be one of the finest owner-winemakers in the Brunello region. Like many producers here, he owns two Brunello vineyards in the Montalcino area, totaling nearly 50 acres. Pacenti believes that his 17 acres in the cooler, northern part of the area provide aromas and elegance, whereas his 32 acres farther south give the wine its structure, power and fine tannins. 2,500 cases made." -- The Wine Spectator, December 2006

"Giancarlo Pacenti is among the small number of producers who doesn't bottle single-vineyard wines, instead he prefers to blend the juice from his holdings across the zone to make one Brunello, which he thinks yields a wine with greater balance than single-vineyard wines are capable of. Tasting his wines, the 2003 Brunello in particular, its awfully hard to disagree with this approach. Pacenti believes his long-standing collaboration with the University of Bordeaux paid huge dividends in 2003. Pacenti reported that, as expected, his oldest vineyards held up best during the scorching-hot vintage. Between the small amount of juice the grapes contained and the burnt fruit that was tossed at the sorting table, yields were down about 35%. Fermentation was done at lower temperatures than normal in order to avoid extracting astringent tannins. Pacenti also reduced the amount of new oak to 50-60% from the more typical 70-80%, using the higher percentages of new oak for his oldest vineyards. The Brunello was aged in a cellar kept to a lower temperature than normal in order to slow down the wine's development. Marina 1 - LIAR GAME (PG/137 minutes)

Nao Kanzaki (Erika Toda) is a young simple college student who finds herself unwittingly involved in a mysterious competition called the Liar Game Tournament (LGT). In this competition, participants try to cheat one another of a large sum of money (loaned to them from the tournament organizers). To win - one must employ every possible trick and device to lie, cheat, swindle and con. Winners take home an obscene amount of money, while the losers incur an insurmountable mountain of debt. Nao seemingly has no chance of survival in this microcosm of greed and deceit. Fortunately, she manages to enlist the help of master con man, Shinichi Akiyama (Shota Matsuda), whose razor-sharp mind and genius with manipulation helps her survive an onslaught of ruthless challenges.

LIAR GAME: THE FINAL STAGE presents the ultimate challenge for young Nao and Akiyama - a final showdown based on a new game of deception inspired from the story of the 'Garden of Eden.' God created the 'Garden of Eden,' an earthly paradise where he sent to live one male and female, Adam and Eve. In the end, Adam and Eve succumbed to temptation by eating the forbidden fruit, causing them to be banished from the garden forever.

The concept of the game is based on this idea of temptation and pits the top players of the LGT against each other. The twist, is that to win, the players must ironically not seek to deceive one another but endeavor to trust and cooperate. If they can do that, everyone is guaranteed to emerge as victors. Yet, maintaining mutual trust in this battle of wits is no mean feat. Upping the ante, hiding among the finalists is a certain 'Player X,' planted by the tournament organizers to cause disarray and serve as the ultimate 'trust assassin.'

Marina 2 - THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (R21 - Sexual Violence/152 minutes)

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, ruthless computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate.

When the pair link Harriets disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vanger's are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

Inspired by the true story of Jewish high jumper Gretel Bergmann, Berlin ‘36 replays a remarkable piece of forgotten Olympic history. Bergmann (award-winning actress Karoline Herfurth) was considered a top contender for the gold medal at the 1936 Summer Games in Nazi-controlled Berlin. With the Americans threatening an Olympic boycott if Jewish athletes were barred from competing, Bergmann is invited to training camp. But uncomfortable with a Jewish athlete on the Aryan team, the Nazis conspire to replace her with an unknown über-athlete (Sebastian Urzendowsky), who years later is revealed to be a man. Berlin ‘36 is the exploration of a tenuous friendship between two outsiders who find themselves in unimaginable circumstances. Bergmann eventually escaped to the U.S., where she still lives, and was invited by the German Olympic Committee to be its guest at the Centennial Games in Atlanta.

Intimate Lighting is a dramatic comedy that charts the course of a music, beer, and slivovitz-fuelled weekend visit by a town mouse to a country mouse. Petr is a professional soloist who, along with his free-spirited mistress, Stepa, arrives at the provincial home of his old friend from the music academy, nicknamed Bambas, who is weighed down by the responsibilities of the post of Head of the local music school and the demands of family. The film's pace of gentility proliferates as various personal interactions ensue upon the arrival of Bambas' guests. The gentle flood of ironic contrasts, glaringly offered by the film, is witty and affectionate, rather than knowing or moralistic.

Rich in amusing little incidents, and sometimes surreal quotidian details, Intimate Lighting unassumingly sets up its contrast between town and country, young and old, with the feel of a modern day fairy-tale. Like all true classics it is so sharply anchored in its time and place that it cannot help but speak, if softly, to viewers far away in every sense.

About the Director Ivan Passer

Ivan Passer started out in the film industry as a scriptwriter, and worked as assistant director to fellow Czech director, Milos Forman, on all of his films made in Czechoslovakia including A Blonde in Love (1965) and The Firemen's Ball (1967). He made his debut with the short A Boring Afternoon (1964), which looked at the lives of soccer fans. His feature debut is a key film of the Czech New Wave, Intimate Lighting (1965), a tragicomic tale of two musicians facing up to their lost dreams. The film captured international attention for its gentle story of everyday life and use of music, winning two awards from the U.S. National Society of Film Critics. Passer's success on home ground was cut short when the Soviets invaded Czechoslovakia in 1968. He moved to the United States where he has lived and worked ever since.

As Part Two begins, we find Nodame (Juri Ueno) still pining for Chiaki's (Hiroshi Tamaki) unconditional affection as she struggles to mature and find her own place in the musical world. The couple's quirky and farcically clumsy love affair begins to mature into a somber and serious adult love story as the final chapter unfolds. And with so much plot line riding on this final installment, the producers have pulled out all the stops with an all-star cast that includes most of the familiar fixtures of the series including: Eita, Asami Mizukawa, Keisuke Koide, Eiji Wentz, Becky, Yu Yamada, Takeshi Nadagi (The Plan 9), Seiji Fukushi, Michiko Kichise, Masato Ibu and Naoto Takenaka. The headlining star arguably remains the music itself as Nodame Cantabile Part Two offers a spectacular orchestral score, turning movie theaters into virtual concert halls. Throw in plenty of laughs, tears and emotion, and you get a spectacular climax to a growing legend that promises to settle once and for all the question of what lies ahead for Nodame and Chiaki. Will the Nodame-Chiaki concerto finally come to pass? And will their love triumph?

Lurid, excessive and unapologetically melodramatic, The Cross of Love

exemplifies the style of filmmaking that Finnish director and former

matinee idol Teuvo Tulio is most famously known for.

Through the form of a ‘cautionary tale’, The Cross of Love tells the story

of a naive lighthouse keeper’s daughter who longs for a life in the big

city. One stormy night when a suave stranger is rescued from drowning by

her father, she decides to elope with him to the city against her father’s

wishes. After arriving in the city, she soon finds herself trapped in a

downward spiral of ruin and destruction.

Like many Finnish films made in the 1940s, The Cross of Love falls under

the genre of “problem film” that examines the social upheaval in the

aftermath of the war. What transcends the film is the delight in which it

takes in the breaking of the moral code and the wild energy that the

director imbues in the film with scenes that alternate from the absurd to

the sublime, creating a frenzied montage of sin and redemption that

achieves an almost religious fervour.

About the Director Teuvo Tulio (1912 2000)

One of the most fascinating figures of Finnish cinema and a major

influence on Aki Kaurismäki, Teuvo Tulio began his career in the 1920s as

a matinee star and Finland’s answer to Rudolph Valentino. In the 1930s, he

turned his hand to directing and became famous for creating melodramas

that blurred the line between morality and sensation.

Tulio’s films were known for their wildly expressive style and often

featured stories of fallen women and the duplicitous men that betrayed

them. Most of his films starred his long-time collaborator and muse Regina

Linnanheimo whose over the top dramatisation was a perfect match to his

manic vision.

Some of Tulio’s most memorable films include The Song of the Scarlet

Flower (1939), a story about a lascivious lumberjack set against the

backdrop of a beautiful rugged countryside; In the Fields of Dreams

(1940), a sexually frank melodrama of a shepherdess led astray; and The

Way You Wanted Me (1944), a story about a country girl forced into

prostitution.

Falling into obscurity in the 1970s, Tulio’s reputation as a master of

melodrama was reinstated through a series of retrospectives presented in

the United States.
