Umbria ( Gubbio )
GUBBIO
Gubbio, north east of Perugia is also accessible via coach or by train. However, I was advised to go by coach as it brings us right to the city centre. By train, we need to take another local bus to reach the historic centre.
As the coach approached the town, the Teatro Romano ( bottom left ) which was built in 1st century AD was within sight. On a Sunday morning , the whole town was bustling with tourists buying souvenirs or sipping their espresso or cappuccino in the café ( Il Bar ).
It would be a waste to visit Gubbio without taking the cabinovia (cable car) up Monte Ingino which is more than 700m above sea level. There is a Basilica di San Ubaldo nearby which is worth visiting as the famous Ceri, the symbol of the Region of Umbria is stored inside.
Palazzo dei Consoli (Top right) which is a museum and picture gallery is not to be missed too.
It is located at Piazza Grande, the most daring medieval piazza in Italy and a masterpiece of civic architecture. On display in the museum are the Eugubine Tablets, seven bronze slabs written in the ancient Umbrian language.
An ideal time to visit Gubbio is during the Ceri Race.
