Friuli-Venezia Giulia ( Venezia )

VENEZIA

This is my second time in Venezia since my first visit 4 years ago. Nevertheless, I never get bored of this romantic city that is famous for their gondola rides and tiramisu dessert. I was hoping to see one of the exciting scenes in The Italian Job whereby the police were chasing the bank robbers in their patrol boats.

Our priority as usual is to search for our accommodation. We were approached by an Italian guy whose apartment was opposite the Venezia Santa Lucia train station. We wanted to view the room first and followed the map that he indicated. However, halfway we were approached by another Chinese guy who thought we were Japanese or Korean. His face was delighted when he heard of our nationality and our fluent Mandarin. We were persuaded to view his room as he offered a lower price and we were also delighted to hear that a Chinese style breakfast will be provided too. Wow, the last time I had Chinese food was couple of months ago.

At his apartment, it was rather shabby with narrow and dark staircases. However, we couldn’t wait to unload our backpacks to explore Venezia and her grand canal. We bought the 1 day boat ticket and hopped onto the next water taxi that came by without seeing which direction it is going to. As evening approaches, we could see the sunset and the air was getting chilly as we sat in front of the boat. The ride along the Grande Canal was breathtaking and exhilarating. The ferry ride from one end to the other could take more than 1 hour without realizing. Piazza San Marco looked charming and peaceful at night even without the greedy pigeons.

It is no surprise that most tourists will ended up with slight migraine as to explore Venezia is like walking in a maze. We were looking for dinner and chanced upon a supermarket (COOP) and decided to cook our dinner at the apartment. The dinner was simple with the ready to cook Risotto alla Milanese, Cream soup with assorted seasonal Mushrooms (Funghi) and Tiramisu to complete the dinner.

The next morning, we wasted no time and had our early breakfast. Mr Tong , the owner cooked us some Chinese dishes. However, I was surprised to find Kimchi and Jelly Pork being served. The former was to cater to the Korean guests while the latter was a favourite dish of the owner.

We decided to explore the islands outside Venezia namely Murano, Burano and Torcello and they are famous of their Venetian Glasswares, Laces and Cathedral respectively. Both Murano and Burano have colourful houses and street scenes. Torcello on the hand is more solemn.

The ride between the 3 islands can be confusing as you might take the wrong direction and head back to the Veneto mainland instead. As we approached the lagoon of Venezia, we alighted near Piazza San Marco to catch a glimpse of the hungry pigeons and cathedral with interesting mosaic designs.

On our way back, we passed by Rialto Bridge and waved to the tourists standing on the bridge itself. Back at the apartment, we left the keys behind as Mr Tong was probably working at the restaurant. With only 15 minutes to catch our train to Trieste, we dashed through the throngs of crowd and arrived at the station panting heavily.
