Synopsis

What happens when two very strange and disfunctional couples meet? Noah Renders is a sensitive insurance adjuster who takes care of the psychological and physical needs of his clients as well as having sex with them. Hera, who is Noah's wife, is a film censor who secretly records the pornographic films that she rates in order to show them to her older sister. Bubba and Mimi like to act out bizarre fantasties in elaborate settings. One day, the Renders get an offer to vacate their home for a "film shoot" by Bubba and Mimi. Both couples discover how poorly adjusted their lives and those of others can be. This black comedy is Atom Egoyan's 4th feature film. The story was inspired by a fire in his parents' furniture business in Victoria, Canada.

Awards: Best Canadian Feature Film, Toronto International Film Festival, 1991 Special Jury Prize, Moscow Internationl Film Festival, 1991

‘I have made a film that concerns an insurance adjuster, some film censors, an ex-football player, an aspiring cheerleader, a podiatrist, an actress, a lamp merchant, a butterfly collector and the devoted staff of a large motel. Everyone is doing what they are doing for a reason, which is never the reason. I wanted to make a film about believable people doing believable things in an unbelievable way.’ - Atom Egoyan
