Spoleto
From Perugia’s Fontivegge train station, I took a train to Spoleto, 65km south of Perugia. During the ride, the train passed by Assisi, Spello, Foligno , Trevi and continues its way to Roma Termni after Spoleto. The single trip ticket to Spoleto is affordable at EUR3.50.
Spoleto is beautiful as I enjoyed my 5 hours there. The town is famous for Festival of the Two Worlds, which is a musical event in July. However, now the town is back to its sleeping mode which makes it ideal for visitors to explore this charming town.
There is a famous bridge, Il Ponte delle Torri (Bridge of towers) built in 13th century. It spans across 230m long along and 80m tall. It links Spoleto to the other side of the mountain called Monteluco. The bridge is an Acquaduct and was used to transport water from the mountain to Spoleto. However, our Italian teacher, Roberta told the class about a sad story. This bridge is a popular spot for people to commit suicide and her Latin teacher took her own life here years ago. Nevertheless, it is indeed scenic to see the town through a window from the bridge.
Next, I went to Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta which is one of the most beautiful cathedral in Spoleto. I waited till 3.30pm for the cathedral to open her doors to visitors. I must confess that I have reached the point where all the churches are beautiful here in Italy and I am beginning to lose interest in appreciating them by now.
Later, I spent some time exploring the town and met an old Italian couple . They offered me direction without me asking even though I do have a map with me. They wished me Buona Giornata ( Have a good day ) after making sure that I take the right direction. This couple is by far the most friendly Italians that I have ever met. The road that I took later led me to a house with rows of grapes growing on their front entrance. I can't resist but to pluck a few tiny grapes to quench my thirst. What a lame excuse!
